Tomato rice recipe – a slight tangy-spicy, dal tempered quick rice recipe prepared from sauteed tomatoes. This south indian style recipe is a tasty and quick lunch box option. It is also famous as tomato bhath recipe.
During this week grocery shopping, I found delicious looking locally grown tomatoes and bonus was, low price when compared with usual price. So I bagged some extra kilos of tomato for juice, salsa and also was temped to cook tomato rice, which mum used to prepare for our lunch box.
Tomatoes are one of the must have ingredient in kitchen. They are fully packed with vitamin A, vitamin E & vitamin C. They are also good source of antioxidants.
This tomato rice recipe is my version, which I often prepare at home. You can use fresh rice or like curd rice you can use left over rice. Long grain rice, basmati rice or short grain rice can be used for this recipe. I’ve used basmati rice in this recipe.
Serve tomato rice hot with raita and papad.

1 cup basmati rice
3 tomatoes medium size,chopped
1 onion medium size,chopped
5 garlic cloves,crushed with skin
4 green chili, chopped
2 dried red chili,roughly cut
2 spring curry leaves
4cm cinnamon stick(cut into 2 piece)
2 tsp oil
1 inch mace
1 tbsp groundnut
1/2 tbsp bengal dal/chana dal
1/2 tbsp urad dal
1 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
2 tbsp coriander leaves,chopped
1/2 tbsp lemon juice
pinch of asafoetida
salt to taste
Step by step method
1.Soak basmati rice for 30 mins.
2.Cook the rice with sufficient water and salt. Drain excess water with colander and keep the rice aside to cool.
3.In a wide wok heat oil.
4.Once oil is hot add cinnamon, mace, clove and fry for 2 mins.
5.Add groundnut, bengal dal, urad dal & mustard seeds.
6.As mustard seeds crackle,add onion and crushed garlic,saute for 2 to 3 mins.
7.Add green chili, red chili, curry leaves and saute till onion turn light golden.
8.Add tomatoes. Mix well and cook till tomatoes are soft and mushy.
9.Add salt, turmeric powder, asafoetida and mix.
10.Add some fresh coriander leaves and mix.
11. Turn off the stove and lemon juice and mix well.
12.Add rice and mix well.Serve it hot.
1.Choose red ripened tomatoes for this recipe.
2.You can add about 2 tbsp off water while cooking tomatoes .
