Kokum sharbat or Punarpuli juice is prepared from kokum, a tangy fruit.It is used widely in Konkan belt for preparing refreshing drinks & in curries. It is commonly known as kokum in Goa & Maharashtra, as punarpuli or baddpuli in Mangalore and Udupi region.
It is a pink round fruit of which the outer skin is dried in sunlight for over a week. Once dried , skin gets harder & it can be stored in air tight container for months,
& can be used as when required.
Kokum is soaked overnight, which leaves pinkish liquid next morning. Using this liquid we can prepare refreshment drinks such as kokum sharbat or Punarpuli Juice, solkadi & even rassam.
Kokum concentrated solution , dried kokam is readily available in market.
Kokam is a very healthy fruit.
It is a rich source of antioxidant.
Kokum sharbat or Punarpuli juice is popular during summer, as it has refreshing & cooling effect on the body. It is a very good medicine for giddiness when consumed early morning.
