Rice has always been an important part of mangalorean cuisine, and this churumuri recipe prepared with puffed rice is the most popular & loved street food of Mangalore and Udupi region. It is also called as charmuri in Mangalore.

There is no one, either kids or adults who can say no to this chat.

Churumuri recipe is an instant dish which can be prepared by  mixing chopped vegetables with puffed rice. A traditional puffed rice is made by heating rice in a sand filled oven.churumuri recipe

Puffed rice is known as mandakki in Karnataka and kurlari in Mangalore region. Puffed rice is also used in bhel puri & also in some chivda recipes.

This chatpata churumuri recipe can be enjoyed  in stalls which are set up near temples, area fairs, as we walk by sea shores, and also in chat stalls.

In childhood, the first thing we notice as we set our feet near premises of the fair is charmuri sellers. They set up their stall in a wink of an eye. And with robotic speed they chop tomatoes, onion, grate carrot, beetroot and also mangoes during the season and serve you with lip smacking charmuri. I still remember dragging my dad to churumuri stall and make him buy it for us. Usually churumuri recipe is served in paper cones.

Ingredients

  • 100 gm puffed rice
  • 1 medium size onion chopped
  • 1 medium size tomato chopped
  • 5 tbsp grated carrot
  • 4 tbsp roasted peanuts
  • 2 tbsp grated raw mango
  • 1 /2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp coriander leaves chopped
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1/2 tbsp red chilli powder
  • salt to taste

Instructions

  • Take chopped onion, tomato, grated carrot, raw mango, coriander leaves, chilli powder, salt in a bowl and mix well.

  • Add coconut oil, lemon juice and mix it. If not coconut oil, you can choose oil of your choice.
  • At the end add puffed rice, peanuts and mix it. Serve it immediately.

Notes

You can also add same amount of grated beetroot as carrot if available.
